A Poem for Mom

Alvina Catherine Rankin

My mom
A human, woman, daughter, mother
A being of innocence and courage
Working hard and long
Giving of her self
Providing for her family
Giving us everything she could
So that we had what we needed
I remember her caring for me, making sure I was fed, clean, and safe
She sang ballads to me while sitting on the side of my bed
Listening to mom’s sweet voice helped me fall to sleep after a busy day of playing
I appreciate that she let me play so much, that she encouraged my imagination
Mom let me discover the power of just being and being in the moment
That comes so much easier for children unburdened with problems and worries
She sheltered me from the hard things, the things she experienced at a young age
Mom didn’t want me to go through what she went through
As a change of life baby and a child of the Depression
She was woken up from innocence way before her time
Gramma beat her, Uncle raped her, Society neglected her
It’s sad and it’s common and it’s also sad because it’s common
Mom moved on, a woman and a survivor
She married my dad, Joe Pat, a Buddhist and Pacifist CO serving in the Air Force
Finally, a gentle man was in her life and she so deserved him
They travel around the world and at 28 years old, she gave birth to me in Panama
She gave me a beautiful name that I love and appreciate
She gave me everything she didn’t have
She made sure the horrors of her childhood never came near me
Mom had courage, commitment and strength of will and a desire to serve
In her years after my dad passed away, she volunteered at the local hospital
She greeted everyone at the door and helped them find their way
I can see her doing that, with a big smile and a caring voice
Once again, she had a purpose that mattered and that was important her
It gave her joy and that is all I ever have wanted for my mom
For her to be happy.
Thanks Cathy. Thanks Joe Pat.
You gave me life and you gave me what you couldn’t have
I know Mom is worry-free now
She’s with Divine Mother basking in the light of love and peace
I miss you mom
I love you mom
